Let's be honest.

Women don't always get paid less because they earn less.

Sometimes they get paid less because they get credit for less.

There's a name for that pattern.

The Matilda Effect.

Originally used to describe women scientists whose discoveries were credited to men, the concept has expanded far beyond the laboratory.

Today, it shows up in boardrooms, startup ecosystems, venture capital, academia, politics, and media.

And despite Canada's reputation as a leader in gender equality, Canadian women continue to face many of the same barriers: lower recognition, fewer citations, less media coverage, and slower paths to leadership.

The names change.

The pattern doesn't.

What Is the Matilda Effect?

The Matilda Effect describes the systematic tendency for women's contributions to be overlooked while men receive the recognition, awards, promotions, and historical credit.

The term was coined in 1993 by historian Margaret Rossiter and named after suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage, who spent much of her life documenting the ways women's achievements were erased from public record.

At its core, the Matilda Effect is simple:

A woman helps build something.A man becomes the story.

Sometimes it's intentional.

Often it isn't.

But the outcome is the same. Recognition flows in one direction.

Why It Matters

The Matilda Effect isn't just a history lesson.

It's a power structure.

Recognition creates credibility. 

Credibility creates opportunity. 

Opportunity creates influence.

The people who receive credit get the promotions, speaking engagements, funding opportunities, media coverage, and leadership roles that follow.

The people who don't are often left behind.That's why this conversation extends far beyond science. It's about who gets seen as an expert.

Who gets remembered.

And who gets written into history.

A Pattern Hidden in Plain Sight

You don't need to look back to Nobel Prize archives to see the Matilda Effect.

You can find versions of it across modern Canada.

Women founders continue to receive a disproportionately small share of venture capital funding.

Women experts are quoted less frequently in media coverage.

Women remain underrepresented in executive leadership, boardrooms, and senior academic positions.

And women still perform a disproportionate amount of invisible labour—in businesses, homes, communities, and workplaces.

The modern Matilda Effect isn't always someone stealing your idea.

Sometimes it's being left off the panel.

Being excluded from the headline.

Being introduced as the partner instead of the founder.

Being described as support when you helped build the company.

The language has evolved.The pattern hasn't.

The Canadian Women We Should Know Better

The Matilda Effect isn't only an American or European story.

Canada has its own women whose contributions changed the course of science, medicine, and technology—often without becoming household names.

Dr. Roberta Bondar

Canada's first female astronaut and the first neurologist in space.

In 1992, Bondar flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery and later led groundbreaking research on how the human body adapts to spaceflight.

Yet ask Canadians to name a scientist, and many still struggle to think of a woman.

Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui's Collaborator: Dr. Johanna Rommens

In 1989, Canadian geneticist Dr. Johanna Rommens played a pivotal role in identifying the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis.

The discovery transformed diagnosis and research for one of the most common fatal genetic diseases affecting Canadian children.

While the breakthrough is celebrated, Rommens' name is far less widely recognized than the discovery itself.

Dr. Brenda Milner

Often called the founder of modern neuropsychology, the Montreal-based researcher transformed our understanding of memory and cognitive function.

Her work influenced decades of neuroscience research and is still taught in universities around the world.

Yet outside academic circles, few Canadians know her name.

Dr. Mona Nemer

A pioneering medical researcher and current Chief Science Advisor of Canada, Nemer's work on cardiovascular development has shaped global understanding of heart disease.

Her appointment marked a major milestone for Canadian science leadership.

But like many women in STEM, her public profile remains far smaller than her impact.

Dr. Donna Strickland

In 2018, the Ontario physicist became only the third woman in history to win the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Before winning the Nobel, she famously did not even have a Wikipedia page because editors claimed she was not notable enough.

Think about that.

One of the world's leading physicists wasn't considered notable.

Until Stockholm said she was.

Rewriting the Record

The good news?

The story is changing.

Researchers are documenting overlooked women scientists. Organizations are preserving forgotten histories.

Founders are increasingly controlling their own narratives instead of waiting for institutions to tell them.

The goal isn't to take recognition away from men. It's to tell the complete story.

Because when little girls see women as inventors, scientists, founders, and leaders, success becomes easier to imagine.

And easier to pursue.

Representation doesn't create talent. It reveals it.

The Matilda Effect isn't really about science.

It's about attribution.

Who gets introduced first. Who gets quoted.

Who gets invited onto the stage. Who becomes the face of the success story.

In Canada, we like to believe we've moved beyond that conversation.

But women founders still raise less capital. Women experts still receive less visibility.

Women leaders still perform a disproportionate amount of invisible work.

The Matilda Effect didn't disappear.

It evolved.

Every time a woman gets the byline. Every time a founder insists on taking up space.

Every time we tell the full story instead of the convenient one.

The pattern weakens.

History doesn't change because someone rewrites it. 

History changes because someone finally records what actually happened.
